The Rectangle of Life: How Much Time Do You Really Have to Live?

Today, I’m going to share a powerful technique for WAKING UP to the reality of your life—a simple yet eye-opening exercise I learned from the inspiring work of Dr. Jonathan Royle.

Imagine your life as a rectangle divided into 10 squares, each representing a decade. Grab a piece of paper and sketch this out. Now, cross out the decades you’ve already lived.

How many squares are left?

This exercise is a wake-up call. It’s a stark reminder of how quickly time passes—and how little of it we truly have left to live on our own terms. But if you are like 99.99% of people even those remaining squares aren’t entirely ours - at least not yet. Let’s explore why.

Where Does All Your Time Go?

One-Third of Your Life Is Spent Sleeping

Sleep is essential for your physical and mental health, but it takes up about one-third of your life. Cross out one-third of your remaining squares to account for the hours spent sleeping. While you can’t reduce this much, you can improve your sleep quality to wake up energized and ready to embrace the day.

Another Third Is Taken by Daily Necessities

Work, commuting, eating, and household tasks take up another significant portion of your life. These necessary activities often feel like obligations rather than opportunities for joy. Cross out another third of your remaining squares to represent this time.

What’s Left?

Now, look at what remains. Shocking, isn’t it? This is the time you truly have to live on your own terms—to enjoy, create, and thrive.

While every moment of life is valuable, including time spent on sleep or daily routines, let’s be honest: it’s the remaining portion that feels most exciting. If you design your life intentionally, you can maximize this space. But if you don’t, even these precious hours can slip away—wasted on distractions, obligations, or living someone else’s life.

This is your space to:

  • Do what you love.

  • Pursue activities that bring you joy.

  • Create moments of lasting fulfillment.

What would that be for you?
Take a moment to reflect. Listen to your heart. What truly lights you up? This is your chance to design your life around what matters most to you.

The Hidden Blocks Holding You Back

For many people, it’s not just time that slips away—it’s the mental and emotional blocks that prevent them from truly living. Fears, unresolved traumas, and self-doubt can act as invisible chains, keeping you stuck in routines, avoiding opportunities, or playing small in your own life.

These blocks don’t just take up space in your mind—they rob you of your potential. Imagine how much more fulfilling your life could be if you weren’t held back by fear of failure, fear of rejection, or the emotional weight of past traumas.

Why You Must Face Your Fears

To live fully, you must face what’s holding you back. Whether it’s fear, anxiety, or self-sabotaging habits, addressing these issues is the first step toward reclaiming your time and designing the life you truly want.

  • Start with small steps: Reflect on what scares you and why.

  • Take action: Whether it’s journaling, meditating, or confiding in someone you trust, acknowledge and confront your fears.

If the journey feels overwhelming, you don’t have to face it alone.

Seeking Help to Live Fully

Sometimes, overcoming fears and healing from trauma requires guidance from someone who understands how to help you unlock your potential. As award-winning, best hypnotic consultants in the UK, we have helped countless people overcome fears, break free from past pain, and rediscover the joy of living fully.

Using powerful hypnosis techniques, we work with your subconscious mind to help you:

  • Let go of fears and limiting beliefs.

  • Unlock confidence and clarity to pursue what truly matters to you.

Whether you choose self-help or professional support, the most important thing is to take action. Don’t let your fears or past define your future.

The Key to Happiness: Aligning Your Time with Your Needs

Many people feel stuck or dissatisfied because their time isn’t aligned with their core needs. To live a fulfilling life, you must prioritize what truly matters to you.

Here are the essential areas to focus on:

Love and Connection

Time spent nurturing relationships—whether with a romantic partner, family, or friends—is never wasted. Building a happy, healthy relationship or deepening your connections with loved ones creates the emotional foundation for a joyful life.

Financial Stability

Money may not buy happiness, but financial security reduces stress and provides freedom. Use your time to build financial stability, whether through a fulfilling career, a side hustle, or investments. Financial security allows you to focus on what truly matters without constant worry.

Health and Well-Being

Without good health, it’s hard to enjoy the other aspects of life. Dedicate time to exercise, eat well, and care for your mental health. A strong body and a clear mind will help you embrace life fully.

Personal Growth

Growth is essential for lasting happiness. Whether it’s learning a new skill, reading, or overcoming fears, personal development helps you become the best version of yourself.

What Else Brings Happiness?

While the core needs above are universal, there are other areas that can bring fulfillment:

  • Purpose and Contribution: Many people find joy in giving back—whether through volunteering, mentoring, or pursuing meaningful work.

  • Adventure and Fun: Don’t underestimate the power of trying new things, traveling, or simply having fun. These experiences add vibrancy to life.

  • Spiritual Growth: For some, connecting with their spiritual beliefs or seeking inner peace is a source of deep fulfillment.

Happiness isn’t one-size-fits-all. The key is to identify what truly matters to you and align your time with those priorities.

What Will You Do with Your Time?

Now that you’ve visualized how little time is truly yours, the question is: What will you do with it? Will you spend it doing what brings you joy and fulfillment? Or will you let it slip away in routines and obligations that don’t serve you?

You have the power to reclaim your time and design a life you love. Whether that’s prioritizing relationships, pursuing financial freedom, improving your health, or exploring personal growth, it starts with small, intentional steps.

The time is now. Make every moment count.
